European Accessibility Act checklist for Shopify and WooCommerce.
If your online shop sells to consumers in the EU, the European Accessibility Act (EAA) has applied to you since 28 June 2025. In practice, that means meeting WCAG 2.1 level AA (via the EN 301 549 standard), publishing an accessibility statement, and keeping evidence of what you fixed. Micro-enterprises (fewer than 10 staff and no more than €2m turnover) are exempt for services; everyone else, including US and UK stores selling into the EU, is in scope.

What you need to know.
Enforcement has started
National authorities can order fixes and impose fines, which vary by country and reach up to around €1m. The first cases against retailers were brought in 2025–2026.
Overlays don't count
Accessibility toolbar widgets do not make a shop compliant. The fixes have to be in the theme, the checkout and the apps you install.
Evidence matters
An authority will ask for your statement, your audit and your remediation log. A dated evidence trail reduces your exposure even when some gaps remain.
The step-by-step path.
Day 1: run the pre-audit
Crawl your shop with the included script and get a per-page report of machine-detectable WCAG failures. Python, no installs.
Week 1: fix the blockers
Keyboard-operable checkout, labelled form fields, named icon buttons, product alt text, visible focus, contrast, no autoplay, zoom enabled.
Weeks 2–3: structure and content
Headings, skip link, page titles, filters, modals and cookie banners, reflow, captions, real HTML size charts, colour-independent cues.
Week 4: apps and evidence
Test every third-party app, publish the accessibility statement, file the remediation log and schedule re-tests.
Every file, ready to use.
Who it's for: Shops selling to EU consumers with 10+ staff or over €2m turnover (including US and UK stores), and the agencies that build and maintain them.

Common questions
Does the European Accessibility Act apply to my online store?
If you sell products or services to consumers in the EU through a website or app and you are not a micro-enterprise (fewer than 10 staff and no more than €2m annual turnover), it very likely does, even if your business is based outside the EU.
Which standard do I have to meet?
The EAA points to the harmonised standard EN 301 549, which for web content means WCAG 2.1 level AA.
Will an accessibility overlay or widget make me compliant?
No. Overlays do not fix the underlying code. The checklist shows where to fix your theme, checkout and apps instead.
Does it work for Shopify and WooCommerce?
Yes. The checklist gives theme-file and admin locations for both, and the audit script works on any public website, including Magento and custom shops.
Is this legal advice?
No. It is a compliance accelerator. Confirm applicability and exemptions with counsel.
Do I get updates?
Yes, free updates for 12 months as guidance and enforcement evolve.
